Off to a part of the area that&#8217;s a little off the beaten path; Nestor Peak and Buck Creek Trail. Buck Creek Trail is a nice singletrack trail that winds through the Buck Creek watershed down towards the Little White Salmon River in Klickitat County in southwest Washington.<br \/>\nMost people shuttle this ride, but what fun is that? Starting at the Northwestern Lake parking lot, it&#8217;s up Forest Service roads towards Nestor Peak. It&#8217;s a pretty stiff climb nearly all the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoad.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1944\" title=\"Buck Creek Road\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoad.jpg\" alt=\"Buck Creek Road\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoad.jpg 375w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoad-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s steep at the bottom, but it gets steeper the closer you get to the Buck Creek Trailhead. There are some sections that are <em>really<\/em> steep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoadClimb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1945\" title=\"Buck Creek Road Climb\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoadClimb.jpg\" alt=\"Buck Creek Road Climb\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoadClimb.jpg 500w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekRoadClimb-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After about seven miles or so of climbing, you get to the Buck Creek Trailhead<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrailhead.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1946\" title=\"Buck Creek Trailhead\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrailhead.jpg\" alt=\"Buck Creek Trailhead\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrailhead.jpg 375w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrailhead-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The road goes up a little farther to a helipad that is used to ferry in firefighters to this remote location in case of forest fires. You can check it out if you want; usually at this stage of the ride you&#8217;ve had enough climbing. Off to the south in Oregon, you can see Mt. Hood. Today, you can see a bit of smoke from the still smoldering Dollar Lake fire which has been burning for weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/MtHoodFromNestorPeak.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1947\" title=\"Mt. Buck Creek Trail is a great singletrack ride through the woods, this time of year, the trail is hard with spots of moon dust so you have to be careful, it&#8217;s easy to lose traction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrail.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1948\" title=\"Buck Creek Trail\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrail.jpg\" alt=\"Buck Creek Trail\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrail.jpg 500w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuckCreekTrail-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back down at Northwestern Lake, or what&#8217;s left of it, construction crews are reinforcing the Buck Creek Road bridge in preparation for the removal of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificorp.com\/es\/hydro\/hl\/condit.html\" target=\"_blank\">Condit hydroelectric dam<\/a> a mile or so downstream.
