Hoping the fish would be hungry after a long winter, we headed out past <a href=\"http:\/\/troutlakewashington.com\/business\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trout Lake, WA<\/a> and into the hills for the first time in 2012. The snow was gone, but the rain was not. The roads were wet and full of water-filled chuckholes. Hard to believe in a few weeks, these roads will be nothing but rocks and dust.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WABackcountryRoad.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2391\" title=\"Washington Backcountry Road\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WABackcountryRoad.jpg\" alt=\"Washington Backcountry Road\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WABackcountryRoad.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WABackcountryRoad-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The clouds were hanging low over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/giffordpinchot\/recarea\/?recid=31764\" target=\"_blank\">Goose Lake<\/a> and it was damp, dark and gray.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-19-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2392\" title=\"Goose Lake 6-19-12\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-19-12.jpg\" alt=\"Goose Lake 6-19-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-19-12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-19-12-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wet weather is not big news around here. Suited up in GoreTex and out on the lake. I rained off and on for most of the day. Most of the precipitation was drizzle and light showers, with an occasional heavier shower, no need for sunscreen today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RainyGooseLake6-19-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2393\" title=\"Rainy Goose Lake 6-19-12\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RainyGooseLake6-19-12.jpg\" alt=\"Rainy Goose Lake 6-19-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RainyGooseLake6-19-12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RainyGooseLake6-19-12-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Storms moved in and out over the lake all day. It would get windy, then a rainstorm would blow over the surrounding mountain peaks. Between storm cells, it was nearly dead calm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/CalmBetweenStorms.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2394\" title=\"Calm Between Storms\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/CalmBetweenStorms.jpg\" alt=\"Calm Between Storms\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/CalmBetweenStorms.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/CalmBetweenStorms-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fish were not biting as hard as they usually do here, but the fish that were caught were mostly <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brook_trout\" target=\"_blank\">Eastern Brook Trout<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brown_trout\" target=\"_blank\">German Browns<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eou.edu\/~mmustoe\/Fishing.html\" target=\"_blank\">triploid Rainbows<\/a> and an occasional <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cutthroat_trout\" target=\"_blank\">cutthroat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2395\" title=\"Goose Lake Eastern Brook Trout\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout.jpg\" alt=\"Goose Lake Eastern Brook Trout\" width=\"593\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout.jpg 593w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout-96x96.jpg 96w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout-24x24.jpg 24w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout-48x48.jpg 48w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLakeEasternBrookTrout-64x64.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kayak Fishing at Goose Lake 6-19-12\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fXLPZhYE8LE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, late in the afternoon, the rain stopped as we set up camp in the woods. We were able warm up after a cool, wet day and dry out all of our gear so we wouldn&#8217;t have to put on wet, cold clothes at 5:00 AM. It was a little early in the season for the area&#8217;s notorious mosquitoes, which was a welcome bonus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BackcountryCamp.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2397\" title=\"Backcountry Camp\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BackcountryCamp.jpg\" alt=\"Backcountry Camp\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BackcountryCamp.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BackcountryCamp-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a cold night with temps in the high thirties, we were up at 4:30 AM and ready to head out by 5:15 AM. While yesterday was cloudy and rainy, today was clear without a cloud in the sky.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-20-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2398\" title=\"Goose Lake 6-20-12\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-20-12.jpg\" alt=\"Goose Lake 6-20-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-20-12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GooseLake6-20-12-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was nice to know in a half hour or so, we were actually going to see the sun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/PreSunrise6-20-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2399\" title=\"Pre Sunrise 6-20-12\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/PreSunrise6-20-12.jpg\" alt=\"Pre Sunrise 6-20-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/PreSunrise6-20-12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/PreSunrise6-20-12-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a tough day to get the fish to bite, we only had a couple solid strikes and were only able to bring one brown trout to the kayak. Even Goose Lake&#8217;s resident bald eagle looked a little frustrated with the fishing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleAtGooseLake.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2400\" title=\"Bald Eagle At Goose Lake\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleAtGooseLake.jpg\" alt=\"Bald Eagle At Goose Lake\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleAtGooseLake.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleAtGooseLake-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The eagle had enough fishing for the morning, took flight and headed for home. We decided to do the same.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleTakesFlight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2401\" title=\"Bald Eagle Takes Flight\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleTakesFlight.jpg\" alt=\"Bald Eagle Takes Flight\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleTakesFlight.jpg 600w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/BaldEagleTakesFlight-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No matter where you go in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/giffordpinchot\" target=\"_blank\">Gifford Pinchot National Forest<\/a>, you will always be able get a view of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Adams_%28Washington%29\" target=\"_blank\">Mt. Adams<\/a>. Seeing this view of the mountain meant we were headed south and out of the forest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MtAdams6-20-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2402\" title=\"Mt. Adams 6-20-12\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MtAdams6-20-12.jpg\" alt=\"Mt.
