Didn&#8217;t take long before we caught this nice sized smallmouth up against the riverbank rocks. No doubt that bigger fish like this would move to deeper water as the sun came up and the day got warmer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/EarlyMorningSmallmouthBass8-12-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2528\" title=\"Columbia River Smallmouth Bass 8-12-12\" src=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/EarlyMorningSmallmouthBass8-12-12.jpg\" alt=\"Columbia River Smallmouth Bass 8-12-12\" width=\"446\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/EarlyMorningSmallmouthBass8-12-12.jpg 446w, https:\/\/watermanatwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/EarlyMorningSmallmouthBass8-12-12-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That was the biggest fish of the day. It started to get hot very early, headed towards 100\u00b0 and we only managed a couple more smaller bass. When it gets hot, the fish don&#8217;t seem to bite very well, especially when the water levels are really low. The water temperature in the river is in the mid 70&#8217;s and with the hot summer temperatures on top of that, the fish seem to get lockjaw by noon.
