Changes in location and weather turned our luck around and we had a few days of great kayak fishing. It has been extremely windy in the desert southwest, and on top of that, aquatic vegetation has all but killed off one of our favorite kayak fishing spots. We can’t do much about the wind, but we had to find somewhere else to go fishing. When the relentless wind stopped for three straight days, we went to a spot that doesn’t get a lot of action, but our choices are limited. This is the desert after all. It turned out to be a good call because we had three straight days of calm wind and good fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the local weather continues to more unpredictable every day, a couple weeks of strong winds ended with clouds and light rain. When the rain stopped, so did the wind and we were back on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was overcast with calm wind, not the usual weather for the desert southwest. Unusual or not, it was perfect kayak fishing conditions. To make things even better, the fish were biting.<\/p>\n\n\n

Even more unusual was that the wind stayed calm all day. I can’t remember the last time that happened. Many days the fish stop biting an hour or two after sunrise, but that wasn’t the case today either. More fishing time means more chances to catch fish like this nice early afternoon Colorado River largemouth bass.<\/p>\n\n\n

The following day was even more overcast, but the wind remained calm.<\/p>\n\n\n

The largemouth bass fishing remained good. There was plenty of kayak fishing action and once in a while, the big largemouth bass came out to play.<\/p>\n\n\n

The wind started to pick up mid-morning like it usually does, but in another strange weather twist, the wind died down after an hour or so, and was calm for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n

Even a light wind on these shallow backwaters makes it tough to fish, but wind or not, the largemouth bass fishing was good.<\/p>\n\n\n

The third day was predicted to be the last day with calm wind so we were out there first thing in the morning. A beautiful morning, unusually damp, but the fish were still biting.<\/p>\n\n\n

The largemouth bass do not seem to bite at night here, so any fish caught before the sun rises is a bonus for getting up early.<\/p>\n\n\n

The early morning fishing was really good on this day.<\/p>\n\n\n
\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Just like the day before, the wind picked up briefly and then died allowing the fishing to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n

Unlike the day before, about mid-morning, the fishing began to slow down like it usually does around here. Knowing this would be the last chance for kayak fishing for some time, we continued to fish. Rounding the last turn for home, I managed to get one last fish. It turned out to be the biggest bass of the past few days and maybe the fishing season so far. “One last cast” does it again!<\/p>\n\n\n

We paddled in after three days of great fishing, pausing for one last look at what has become a rare sight, calm conditions on the lower Colorado River.<\/p>\n\n\n
