It's the last patch of dirt in the coastal North San Diego urban sprawl. Mostly gone now; warm, sunny singletrack turned into gridlocked roads and tract homes, the trails neatly sanitized for suburban use, but for any mountain biker who rode the Calavera trails back in the day, it was the ultimate secret spot. We used to call it "Calaverez" or "Calaveras" but the City of Carlsbad has renamed it to Lake Calavera Trails; "conditionally" allowing mountain biking in order to "conserve natural lands". If you're not familiar with the City of Carlsbad, that means they want to build a golf course here in the future.
