Carlsbad Skatepark
Adjacent to the world famous Carlsbad Raceway, Carlsbad Skatepark opened in 1976 and was the first skateboard park in California. These photos were taken in August 1979.
Shortly after these photos were taken, the park was buried and eventually demoed.

San Onofre Pipes
Known as "Nukeland" or "San-O", these huge pipes are the cooling water pipes for San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant before they were put into the ocean. These photos are from the summer of 1979.
The pipes were located on Camp Pendelton Marine Corps base and access was severely restricted, especially after the Marines knew people were skating there.
A short, but significant chapter in "Down South" skateboarding history.

Del Mar Skate Ranch
Another big chunk of North San Diego County skateboard history was the Del Mar Skate Ranch. Built in 1978, it was the home of many local skaters who had a tremendous impact on skateboarding.
By 1982, Del Mar Ranch was one of only two skateparks left in Southern California. The photos below were taken during a Pro/Am contest that was videotaped for network TV.
In the photos below, taken at night, we were testing camera and flash units, getting the information we would need to put the gear into waterproof camera housings and use it for surfing photography. These photos were taken in June 1982.
