Cold Winter Riding

A dry, but chilly weekend allowed us to get out for a couple more bike rides. We have been able to do a lot more riding because of the unseasonably mild weather. There has been very little snow and some really decent winter weather.
Yesterday, I took a break from computer work to get a quick road ride in. It was a pretty nice day, definitely on the cool side; about 44 degrees was as warm as it got. Still, the roads were dry and it’s always great to be outside and on the road.

Open Road

You never know what you are going to see around here:

Warning

Today, Don and I headed out to do a little backwoods exploring. As we started up the hill into the higher elevations, the weather was chilly, but fairly mild with partly sunny skies and the sounds of rushing water.

Local Creek

As we worked our way higher into the hills, patches of snow started to appear. The weather may be fairly mild in the valley below, but in the higher elevations, it is still winter.

Snow Zone

By the time we got to about 2500′, the snow started to get pretty deep. We were on our way to a spot at 3100′, then on to our destination at about 4000′, but our experience and common sense told up that we probably weren’t going to make it to 3100′ because the snow was going to be too deep to negotiate on bikes. The weather was also changing for the worse, getting colder and looking like snow.

Heavy Snow

On the way back down the mountain, Don saw tracks from a pretty good sized cougar. Plenty of them around here, you hardly ever see them. You always have to be careful and alert when out in this area; this is wild country.
By the time I got back home, there were light snow flurries. Winter might be coming around for another visit.
