Another pretty good day of desert kayak fishing on the Colorado River, so a quick post with some photos.
A bit of a change in the weather with scattered clouds moving across the Sonora Desert. The clouds had no effect on the blazing heat and we were out early to avoid the triple digit temperature that was coming in just a few hours.
Luck was with us as there were a few fish willing to bite before sunrise. The night fishing in this spot is usually on the slow to dead side, so any pre-dawn success is a great way to start the day.
Due to the size of this reservoir and the constant water level fluctuations, there are probably not many large bass here. There are other places you can catch large fish, sometimes in extremely shallow water, but this is not the place. The bass you do catch here are full of fight. There might be huge bass here, only one way to find out.
Another day of perfect kayak fishing conditions. It’s going to get windy here and we don’t want to miss a day of kayak fishing when the conditions are like this.
It looks perfect, but like just about everything else, the closer you look, it’s a different story. In the photo below, I’m standing at the “standard” water level. The kayak would be under five or six feet of water. The light colored “bathtub ring” around the reservoir is normally under water.
The bass were scattered all over what was left of the reservoir, I had to pull some of the old smallmouth bass fishing tricks out of the bag to fool some of the bigger fish.
I managed to get one last fish before the desert sun baked the fishing to a dead stop.
More kayak fishing for largemouth bass coming up. With the daytime temperature dropping below 100°, we will be heading out on longer trips, so check back soon.
