Today, I went out looking for a waterfall in a very remote area. There is no road or trail to the waterfall, you get as close as you can on Forest Service roads, then head off into the woods. It doesn’t sound that tough, but here’s what the roads look like:
No parking lot, no signs. The place we are going is out here somewhere
Never made it to the remote waterfall. Too late to head out into the boonies. It’s still winter, days are short and it’s cold at night if you get stuck out in the woods. Plenty to see closer to civilization.
We’ll try again to get into the falls. It doesn’t flow all year, very people get to see it when it’s at full flow. Hopefully we’ll be one of those few.
What Falls are you looking for? By the road – looks like you could be searching for Rattlesnake falls?
Yep. Looking for Rattlesnake Falls. I heard it only flows for a short time every year. I got to the general vicinity kind of late in the day, I was by myself and didn’t want to wander off into the woods that late and never got there.
The area around there is called Panakanick (used to be several homes and a school there, now just a few houses / cabins)- say that three times real fast! It’s beautiful country up there – you can see the pool from the falls on Google Earth, and when you locate it, you can see the “roads” that give access. Most of the bridges have been removed around the area, so vehicular access is difficult at best, but you can get there on foot, bike or horseback easily enough. It’s worth a visit! – lots of flow this time of year!
I’m definitely going to check it out. Some of the roads going in towards the falls from where I was are really overgrown, I might have to look for those other ways in.
We do quite a bit of ATV riding up there in the spring, when the dust is at a minimum. There are some pretty open roads through there, including the main road to the falls from the Panakanick side – they have to be to run them at 60 MPH!! Good luck in your adventures!
While you are riding, watch for the Indian Burial Mounds, there are several of those around there, too. But, don’t mess with them – the natives will scalp ya! If you watch close, there is an old railroad grade up there too. It’s too overgrown to really ride these days. It makes a good jump, though!
