First 2014 Kayak Fishing Trip

The first kayak fishing trip of 2014 is in the books and it was a resounding success, save for the fact that the fish weren’t biting at all. The weather was great, the wind was mostly calm and even though the Columbia River water level is about as high as it’s going to get, the currents were not bad.

The smallmouth bass we were going after did not get the message for the first fishing trip of the year and were nowhere to be found. This time is year is usually a bit slow as far as smallmouth bass fishing goes, but only the big ones are out this early so it’s worth a shot. The water temp is right around 53-55°, so it may be a bit cool for the bass to really start biting. I only got one half hearted nibble today so we will probably wait a few days for the water temps to rise a bit, then give it another shot.
