Great Kayak Fishing

After a long absence, we finally have great kayak fishing for largemouth bass on the Colorado River. Every day of great fishing is important now because the trend is defintely less days like this. We’ve really been lucky here because this place is not known for its great bass fishing.

It’s been a poor winter fishing season in the desert southwest. It’s not a matter of if the fishing was good or bad, there was no fishing at all for months. Our time here is running out and we haven’t been fishing much at all. Even though the fishing hasn’t been very good, we were out there before the crack of dawn on the first calm day.

We were stoked to discover that the fishing was much better than a few days ago. Starting the fishing day with a big largemouth bass is the best way to get things going.

The first day of fishing, we didn’t catch a lot of largemouth bass, but the fish we did catch were bigger than average for this spot.

We caught a number of hard fighting largemouth bass that morning. There were some great kayak fishing battles and I managed to get a lot of them on video with good lighting. That almost never happens.

The modified plastic grubs we were using looked just like the small shad the big largemouth bass were eating, which is nice.

A calm day, unseasonably cool, but comfortable for the normally hot desert and the fishing was good. That has not been happening all that much lately.

The second day of fishing was about the same as the previous day. Perfect kayak fishing conditions.

The conditions were still good and so was the largemouth bass fishing. The fishing had not been this good in months and we were giving it a full effort.

I probably caught the five biggest fish of the entire winter fishing season in this three day span of fishing.

The last day before the desert wind came up and put and end to a great stretch of kayak fishing, the conditions were perfect once again. Three calm days in a row is a rare desert experience these days.

The largemouth bass fishing was still pretty good, but you could tell it was slowing a bit.

The fishing may have slowed a bit but there was plenty of kayak fishing action and the fish were good sized and ready to fight.

I’ve been able to add some photos to the Big Fish Folder, which up to this point, did not have many big fish photos in it.

When it’s going your way, fishing is pretty easy. Of course you always get one more nice fish heading back to the launch beach.

Three days of great kayak fishing we are certainly grateful for because it is a rare thing.

It’s not over yet, there’s more kayak fishing to come so check back soon.
