More Hot Columbia River Smallmouth Bass Fishing

After a great day of kayak fishing for smallmouth bass on the Columbia River yesterday, we were out there before sunrise again today, hoping for more midsummer bass fishing action.

Paddled out to the spot where we caught the two biggest bass of the season yesterday, hoping for more big ones. Didn’t take long before we caught this nice sized smallmouth up against the riverbank rocks. No doubt that bigger fish like this would move to deeper water as the sun came up and the day got warmer.

That was the biggest fish of the day. It started to get hot very early, headed towards 100° and we only managed a couple more smaller bass. When it gets hot, the fish don’t seem to bite very well, especially when the water levels are really low. The water temperature in the river is in the mid 70’s and with the hot summer temperatures on top of that, the fish seem to get lockjaw by noon. After two days roasting in the summer sun on the kayak, I headed back to the launch, stopping to check out one more nice Columbia River beach.

Looks like a couple windy days coming up, maybe a midweek kayak fishing trip before the August Mountain Bike Oregon.
