Rising Water Slows Fishing on the Klickitat River

The fishing on the upper sections of the Klickitat has been very good lately for Chinook salmon and getting better for steelhead. I got this nice Chinook on November 6 using a Mepps #5 spinner. It’s a native female, probably just a little under twenty pounds that was released to continue upstream and spawn. We got the eight minute battle on video, so we’ll have that coming up on the watermanatwork.com website shortly.

Unfortunately, we’ve had a few days of on and off rain which has caused the river to rise dramatically and increase the current flow. When there are large fluctuations in the river level and flow, the fishing usually slows down, which is what is happening now. The changing river conditions have filled the water with runoff which adds to the difficult fishing conditions.

We are going to have to wait another day or so for the river to settle down, which is a bummer, because the weather has been good and this time of year the number of days with decent weather are fewer and fewer. Also, the fishing season ends at the end of November so we are running out of fishing days.
