Two calm days in the desert means two days of kayak fishing on the Colorado River. The overall conditions for fishing around here have declined so we have to travel around, burning gas, trying to find a place to fish. I try to keep this kayak fishing blog about kayak fishing with no politics, but I have to say that the government agencies that manage this area are doing an exceptionally bad job.
So we head over to a more fishable spot on the river and hope for the best. This spot is a long paddle and there is a lot of river vegetation that has a negative affect on the fishing. We’ve also hauled some big bass out of here, so we try to fish here whenever conditions permit.
We got an early start so we could arrive at the fishing spot at sunrise. It’s a couple miles, at least. It’s upstream, although there’s usually not much of a current. A good chance there is a headwind.
We usually get to the spot while it’s still dark. The largemouth usually don’t bite at night at this spot, but I might be changing my mind about that. After a long paddle, it’s great to start the day with a nice largemouth bass.
The sun rose over the desert to a dead calm morning on the Colorado River.
I caught that nice bass before sunrise, but since then, I wasn’t having much luck. Three or four nice largemouth bass would constitute a good day here, so you can’t get down if you’re not hauling them in one after another.
On top of that, these fish have an amazing ability to cough up a big fish hook.
Just when it seems it’s time to give up and pack it in, there’s a big hit and after a good battle, another nice largemouth bass.
A well off the beaten path launch beach on the Colorado River. Access to this beach is in question. This could very well be our last winter of fishing here, so we go fishing every chance we can.
The way things are going, two nice largemouth bass, and a couple smaller ones, is a good day here, so were on it early again the next morning. Just like the day before, I got another decent bass before sunrise. Not as big as yesterday, but I’ll take it.
I wasn’t exactly hauling them in, so I had the time to take in the desert sunrise.
I caught a couple smaller fish, but I wasn’t as lucky as the day before.
Unlike the calm, clear blue skies of the previous day, it was cloudy and somewhat overcast. There was always a breeze, eventually chasing us off the water.
Looks like a few days of wind, but we will be back on it as soon as conditions permit. Check back soon.
